The species grew to fame when a Death Head Hawk-moth was featured on the poster of the film The Silence of the Lambs, the serial killer Buffalo Bill uses their picture on calling cards, and forces them down victims throats.
The Deaths-head Moth will squeak to deter predators. Despite being feared in some regions, it's the only defence the moth has. It's actually amazing how the moth makes the noise, usally other species will rub their legs together much like Cicadas do. However a study by German biologist Heinrich Prell found out they make the noise but inflating and deflating a chamber in its head called the Pharynx - roughly the back of throat in relation to human anatomy.
The study also claimed the moths diet has helped evolve the squeak. Most butterflies and moths have a diet of nectar and a sugary liquid make by flowers. However the Deaths-head mostly feeds on honey, which is a lot quicker so the moths sucking action is a lot more powerful, thus helping evolve the pharynx a little more for sounds.
Deaths Head moths feed directly from the hives of honeybees, as we know bees like to sting, but the Deaths Head has that under control it produces a chemical that soothes the bees meaning they can eat in peace. Stealth!
