A real framed Death's Head hawk moth (Acherontia atropos), hand-mounted by our entomologists in a black or white wooden box frame. The specimen is displayed on high-quality, acid-free conservation board, with its common and scientific names printed beneath it.
The Death's Head hawk moth is named for the skull-shaped marking on its thorax. Native to Africa, the Mediterranean and the Middle East, Acherontia atropos is also a seasonal migrant to northern Europe and Britain.
Adults enter honeybee hives to feed on honey and use chemical camouflage to avoid attack. When disturbed, this species can produce a distinctive squeaking sound by moving air through its pharynx.
Approx. Wingspan: Approx. Wingspan 10-12 cm (male and female)
