The Death's Head moth or Acherontia styx belongs to the Acherontia family of moths. The skull-like pattern and its fanciful associations with the supernatural and evil have fostered superstitious fears of the species. The species name atropos is from Greek myth and related to death. This moth is the exact species shown in The Silence of the Lambs.

Its wingspan reaches 10-12 cm
