Month 2 and in love

Another must-have for any collection

Even the smallest butterfly houses in the world generally have this species. It has a big wow factor thanks to its size and the giant owl eye spot on it's ventral side from which it derives it's name. I was fortunate enough to see one of these in the wild in Costa Rica once, but I've seen them in butterfly houses all over the place.

This golden edged variant is a little more vivid I think than the other species offered by Minibeast and I'm really happy with my specimen.

Nice, certainly not one of my favourites though

I do think it's nice to have a few non-butterflies in my collection and this one adds some interest to the set. They're beautifully presented as always and I do like them - I would say there are a couple of things to watch out for though. First is the colour - mine anyway are not as colourful as the stock photo - the blue one in particular is very dark and the yellow one has quite a greenish tint to it. The other thing is size - as you can see in the photo, the yellow one is a little bigger than the others.

These are obviously real animals and it's expected that there will be some variance between specimens - it's still a nice set, just probably one of the first I'd be happy to lose if I needed to make space for others ;)

Big, Colourful and Reasonably Priced

This one wasn't high on my list of priorities but it adds punch to my collection due to it's size. It's also a species I haven't seen in butterfly houses before so I wonder if it's difficult to transport or breed. Either way it's a welcome addition to my wall.

Stunning

I think there must be some variation in the size of this species because mine definitely seems a little small compared to ones I've seen in the wild. It's a shame that you hardly ever see these in the UK these days (at least not anywhere near London anyway) although I regularly see them in France.

The speciment Minibeast prepared for me is exceptionally well preserved - the lines on the wings are so crisp and clear and the scales are so fine that it almost looks lie the pattern is painted onto canvas.

Lovely. Quite a bit smaller than I expected!

As you can see from the photo, this specimen is not that much bigger than a Monarch, which i was quite surprised about - not that there's anything wrong with being smaller :)

It's one of only two species of the "big" moths I've ever seen alive in a butterfly house (the other being the ubiquitous atlas moth), and this one is rare to come across in captivity. It's a particularly lovely moth to look at, and I liked it so much that I moved one of my other specimens to make room for it in pride of place above my key rack.

Hard to believe it's a moth!

A little like the Madagascan Sunset moth, this species has all the trappings of a butterfly in terms of its physical appearance anyway. It's one of only two species I owned as a kid (no idea what happened to those) so when I decided to start a new collection it was high on my list. Comparatively cheap, this is an underrated species I think with its striking sword tails and it's vibrant highlights. As with all my specimens it was presented beautifully by Minibeast - I have enough of them to say with confidence that the quality of their work is incredibly consistent.

The best British butterfly

I'm on a mission to collect all my favourite British species and unfortunately Minibeast as trouble sourcing many of them due to a lack of breeding programmes in the UK, but if I could choose only one UK species it would probably be the peacock. It's one of the most striking wing patterns of any species anywhere in the world, and we're really lucky to have them here in relative abundance. As with many of the UK species it's quite small compared to most of the other in my collection but if you've seen them in the wild you should know what to expect.

No collection is complete without it

As you can see in the photo, this one looms large in my collection. It's enormous. These moths are common in butterfly houses around the world - I guess because they're so huge and so eye catching that they're worth the effort to breed because of the wow factor. I particularly love the transparent triangles on the wings - it's such an intricate and detailed pattern that it's hard to wrap your head around how it could have evolved. A must have in any collection, and considering the size I couldn't believe how cheap this specimen is!

One of the most vibrant hawk moths

I first came across one of these moths at the Stratford Butterfly farm in their caterpillar room - it was the only specimen there, and I managed to get a couple of nice photos of it so it's always been one of my favourite hawk moths. You can see where it gets the name - the pattern looks a lot like military camo gear, and I can attest that it's quite effective when you see this moth amongst the foliage!

Huge, and beautifully preserved, I consider myself fortunate to have one of these endangered specimens in my home, safe in the knowledge that it was sourced ethically and responsibly.
