Petrified wood fossils are remnants of ancient wood transformed through as process called "petrification", which is a natural process where the organic matter is gradually replaced by minerals. When wood is buried, minerals from groundwater seep into its structure over time. As minerals replace organic material, the wood's original texture and structure are preserved, resulting in a fossil that retains the appearance of the original wood.
